The final dinner night of the year saw Mark Lambert and Nathan Turner, revelling in their roles as PMC and Mess Sec, deliver a twenty-course tasting menu themed around Regimental Battle Honours. Subalterns regaled the mess with vignettes of varying quality and length – directly linked to how far through the bat- ting order they sat.
As the year drew to an end Nik Westlake-Toms, ably assisted by Will Barrell organised a week of field sports and professional study in Scotland. Ex Culloden Hawk was enjoyed by Officers and Warrant Officers alike, all enjoying some excellent days shooting and superb meals while staying in the picturesque Rothiemurcus Lodge. Usually, the haunt of Adventurous Training groups, the Lodge was transformed by the Alex Nichol, decking out the lodge with the Mess Silver.
On return to Tidworth the frequency and gusto of events mul- tiplied week on week, with the Mess Staff being kept busy with Field Officers’ lunches, themed Dinner Nights for the livers-in as well as the usual Christmas season events, including for the first time in two years: Seniors to Officers.
Kicked off with two sporting events between the messes, the vig- our with which the mess approached Seniors to Officers made up for the enforced hiatus. Thanks to Nick Bridges displaying a hitherto unknown ability with a hockey stick, the Officers lead the Seniors at half-time. With mulled wine and mince pies taking the place of energy drinks and oranges the Mess ran out to defend its honour at the Seniors selected sport: American Football(ish). Despite the rules laying out a strict no-contact policy and the replacement of the ball with a frisbee, the innate competitive nature in both messes saw the match end with significant contacts and the substitution of a rugby ball back into the fray. Sadly, the Officers lost here, with the resulting 1-1 tie allowing both messes to retain their dignity. The evening began as usual with some very average singing from both messes (albeit with some above average lyrics), followed drinks and dinner in the Officers’ Mess. After dinner the RSM took both messes down the road for a continu- ation of drinks and the introduction of the subalterns to several ‘new’ games. A fantastic evening for all and the perfect way to cap off 2021.
