The Corporals’ Mess
The Corporals’ Mess is now a refreshed and inviting building, with various committee members who have battled hard to get it to the standard it is today. With a huge thank you to the outoign PMC Cpl Mark Bulbeck who gave up more than enough of his own time to make sure it was in date with what current mess members wanted. He pulled out all the stops to ensure it is a place where we can meet and enjoy each other’s company, this is noticed throughout the week when we run our tea and toast. This is now a place where JNCOs are proud to be a part of which in turn encourages and inspires Troopers to promote and to become a member.
On the official opening day of the Corporals Mess organised by the new PMC, Cpl Chris Bennett, invited all mess members to an informal evening consisting of pizza and beverages (what’s not to love), all of which paid for by the mess and as a welcome to new JNCOs, and to the ones who have missed the mess nights either due to the refurbishment or being away. There was a brilliant turn out and a great way to see in the newer generation of JNCOs in the mess right from the off.
From the pizza night work did not stop for the Corporals Mess Committee, though sadly we could not go ahead with the summer function due to the COVID-19 restrictions. However, we moved on and set our eyes on the Christmas function.
Due to a large number of mess members missing out on previous events due to the lengthy Op CABRIT tours, the Christmas func- tion was planned to be bigger and better than ever before. The mess committee drew up plans, and poured over Covid restric- tions to ensure it would be a night not to forget. The PEC has never sent so many emails in his life nor has he spoken to so many businesses on the phone before. A feat and leadership challenge for the very best of ‘up and coming’ JNCOs. The function proved to be the highlight of the year and has proven that the hard work put into the mess has paid off.
Looking forward to the future intentions of the mess, we would like to start by hosting more evenings throughout each month to give the JNCOs a space where on an evening can come and enjoy themselves. We will also be looking at doing more dinner nights throughout the year and remembering and celebrating our battle honours such as The Battle of Medicina.
The article short in statue, but that is a reflection of Covid-19 and the frustrating reality of having to navigate the pandemic. However, I am in no doubt that the calendar will be full again in the near future and we look forward to opening our doors in true Hussar fashion!
