  Anzio Coy Greater Manchester ACF
5Anzio Coy is one of five Coys in Greater Manchester Army Cadet Force. What’s special about 5 Anzio Coy is that three of our detachments are cap-badged King’s Royal Hussars, and proud
to be so. The other detachments include Grenadier Guards, Queens Own Yeomanry, Royal Artillery and finally Duke of Lancaster’s. For those that enjoy stats we have 180 cadets and 46 volunteer staff.
2021 has been a difficult year for everyone and all detachments were closed for face to face (f2f) training until July when a slow planned process of return began. During close-down some train- ing continued using Zoom and congratulations must go to staff who delivered the extra effort. It is important to add that all the Cadet staff have been busy throughout Lockdown as lots of changes from our Regional Headquarters regarding new training systems, safety procedures and risk assessments.
To celebrate and to raise funds for the 100th Anniversary of the Royal British Legion on the 15th May 2021, in conjunction with Young Minds UK, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) Capt Chris Townson, SI Ann-Katherine Crockett, SI Sean Crompton, SI Fiona Shorthouse and SI Alex Vargas set off from the Cenotaph in St. Peter’s Square in Manchester 0600 to walk to National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire and were later joined by support vehicles driven by SI Christine Berry and SMI Ian Mackie with dogs Taz and Oberon.
Battling exhaustion and pain the team were met along the way by Capt Wayne Harrison and Lt Jordan Battye, before the group
set off again to arrive at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire just after 1500, walking 101.09km in total, having only taken breaks for food and water. The team were met at the finish by family where they found that they had raised £4120 and have since received the GMACF Commandant’s Coin in recogni- tion of being “A Force for Good”.
Returning to f2f allowed our annual camp at Holcombe Moor to go ahead albeit, four days only. First day was relaxed and aimed at getting into the swing of things after lockdown before moving into a day of navigation practice, followed by two days AT that were enjoyed by all with Canoeing, Mountain bike, archery, abseil and air-rifle. Great weather helped too, and it was clear to witness the happiness of training together again after lockdown.
October and November brought a Coy weekend and of course Remembrance Day. All detachments collected for the Royal British Legion and many thousands of pounds were handed over. A wonderful effort by all our cadets and staff involved. Remembrance parades were noticeably well attended in all our local towns. Cadets are always made welcome in our area.
Recruiting has begun again and pleased to report that all of our detachments are full of new shiny recruit cadets, everyone in 5 Anzio Coy is looking forward to a super 2022 and a great relation- ship with Kings Royal Hussars.
