The Regimental Journal of The King’s Royal Hussars 75
It was particularly sad that the Regimental Families’ Day had to be cancelled due to the Covid restrictions of the time. We very much look forward to attending the rescheduled event, which is to be held on a weekend in July 2022, prior to KRH deploying to Estonia. At the time of writing the exact date is yet to be con- firmed, keep an eye on the Association events list on the website at https://www.krh.org.uk/events-list.html.
Your Association has continued to be busy not only in arranging assistance for those members who require some support, and with weekly updates. Major Steve Penkethman, Regimental Secretary, has continued his weekly updates of news, together with copies of former Regiments’ journals, which discontinued in August with the final journals of 10H from 1969, and 11H from 1968. Each journal has been filled with stories, etchings, drawings and photographs of regimental life, which have allowed us better to understand what our forebears achieved. Much was written on the sporting side, but also on general activity, songs, and 10H regularly posed tactical exercises!
I reported last year on the proposal to establish as Ashes’ Burial Plot in the Regimental Graveyard in St Lawrence Church, Barton. The first interment has taken place. Interment costs may be obtained from HHQ.
A comment regularly received by HHQ was the wish for old com- rades to have something to show that they are part of or served in the The King’s Royal Hussars. I hope that you have now all received your Membership Card, and have had the opportunity to brandish proudly your service within our regiments.
It is with great sadness that I have to report on the death of our centenarians Sergeant David Hume (14/20H) on 14 November, and Major Dougie Covill MBE DCM (10H & RH) on 15 November 2021.
I wrote to all Association members early in the Lockdown to remind them that the Association together with the Regimental Welfare Fund was there to look after them, and request that they look-out for former Hussars and the families who may need sup- port during these difficult times. It is important to recognize that while we usually ask SSAFA, to do the legwork and paperwork, your Welfare Fund is always a major contributor to the almonized funds. One of our main rationales is to provide welfare and sus- tenance to those who have served in one of the five regiments, together with dependants. If you know of any former Hussar or their family who may be in-need, I should be grateful if you would inform HHQ in order that the Association may assist in providing appropriate care.
The Regimental Association’s Website, www.KRH.org.uk, enjoyed a small revamp last year, which I hope will provide you with a more informed service. The Association continues to “dis- cover” old comrades, who we can then welcome back into the fold. Please do ensure that HHQ has the details of all your Regimental chums, in order that we may inform them of what the Regiment and the Association are doing for them, and widen our Database.
If you know of any way that the Association may raise its profile please do get in contact with HHQ. I look forward to seeing many
of you at the Cavalry Memorial Parade on 8 May 2022.
