GLANCE
AT THE
PAST
Eric Franklin looks back
Thrapston Baptist Church is set back off Huntingdon Road with the main entrance off St Pauls Gardens near the Co-op.
A stone set in the front façade reads “This place of worship was built by public subscription AD 1787”, a church record dated 27th March 1788 speaking of a legacy being left for the funding of a meeting house some three or four years earlier. The forerunner of the current church was formed on 13th March 1797,
the first Minister, Reynold Hogg, being appointed in 1798 and serving the
community for nine years. His image
is depicted on this early 19th century
etching. One of the earliest church
members was Mary Ekins who left
a £200 legacy to provide for and
continue a school.
A 19th century photograph of the
interior of the chapel is shown which
is thought to date from about 1860 and is one of the earliest photographs
of part of the town.
