Glance at the past........................................................................................
Can you help Eric Franklin with his future stories?
For this December issue I am offering
a miscellany to give a flavour of what
can be expected in 2021 and beyond.
Any assistance you can offer with either identifying any people shown below or with information to help with the production of any of these articles would be appreciated. My email address is at the end of this article.
I start with a group photo (right) that
I acquired some months ago which is embossed with the words “High Street, Thrapston, Kettering”. My guess this was done by the photographer, who has not left their name anywhere on the picture. Does anyone recognise either the location and any, or all, of these people, possibly dated to around the second World War?
The Vase Press began in 1917 in the High Street and moved to premises in Oundle Road in 1922. This picture of the workforce was taken in 1948 (below). Do you recognise any faces in the photograph? Did you work there or have any memories of working there? Do you have a picture of the outside of the building, one which I somehow managed not to take during the 1980’s and 1990’s?
During World War 2 there was a military
camp at the end of Huntingdon Road by the Titchmarsh turn. Any information about this, whether it was a barracks or specific unit, would be appreciated.
Amongst many other articles in preparation for the next few years the following are likely to appear in this slot although not necessarily in this order:
Midland Road Railway Station; The Elephant Tree; Thrapston Institute; Lilford Hall and Park; Tennis in Thrapston; Islip Furnaces; Local aeroplane crashes including one in 1960; Drayton House; Local collectables.
I have several other possible subjects covering the local area on my list, but please keep your suggestions coming in.
