“I’ve weed, Nurse Weed!”
It is amazing to think how life has moved on in the past twenty “ years or so. These days, going into hospital for a lumpectomy is
seen as a day case, with patients going home just hours after their procedure. Even with a mastectomy it is often just a one-night stay. Back in 2001, I was admitted the day before the proposed lumpectomy and stayed four nights. Although I was nervous, I was quite driven to get it done – and out the way. I had no idea what to expect.

I found the ‘attention’ a little overwhelming. There had been endless phone calls and Marilyn had called round to see me. Knowing me as she did, and in true ‘best friends’ style, she had put together a ‘survival kit’ of everything imaginable that she thought I may need, such as pens, paper, puzzle books, magazines, Kit Kats, crisps, shower gel etc. but there were other bits and pieces which caused much hilarity in the ward when I opened it as there were a few surprises – Tena ladies, a plastic boob, a bean bag, plastic pants, a toilet roll... to name but a few! So typical of Marilyn – she knew me well!
I’d also received a surprise; that of a very moving, letter from my Auntie Connie. She had seen the article and photo in the Evening Telegraph.
Dear Tubby,
There was such a happy picture of you in the paper and we had been so pleased with your news; then I spoke to Mum. I was so sorry to hear this kind of news. It would be bad news at any time but just now, when
