Walking through into Theatre was awesome! Jen was already in there, lying on the table, awake with a group of Anaesthetists and other Theatre Staff round her attaching all kinds of wires and various pieces of equipment with bags of different fluids set up, cannulas being inserted and the staff talking with her the whole time. It all looked mightily complicated but VERY organised, everyone working methodically to their assigned tasks – ‘just another day in the office’. They were soon ready to put her ‘under’.

In this time I had been introduced to the rest of the Theatre Team and was shown two trolleys that had dozens of surgical items on them – one trolley for the surgery that was to take place on the breast, the second trolley for the tummy/belly area – every item having its place for a certain cut, stitch and probe! Everyone knew exactly what their role was.

I looked across to see Jen who had been positioned, catheterised and covered in sterile surgical drapes. To avoid sores to her feet they had even placed gel wedges under her heels and her head was on a gel-type ring too – the dignity shown to her was impressive and very reassuring. After a final check to ensure her breathing tubes were in place – and working – they were ready to proceed. Just like watching a medical programme on TV, in walked Mr Varma and Chris, ready to take their positions and their scalpels. Mr Varma asked if I had eaten a good breakfast and said that if I felt queasy I was to let them know. Only time would tell!
Mr Varma worked on Jen’s belly area and Chris the breast area. I prayed I would stay upright. I did and was mesmerised for the next
