In total we donated approximately £1.4 million to KGH and just short of £1m to NGH with other large amounts given to LRI, Lymphoedema, Aromatherapy, Lakelands Hospice, and latterly to provide grants for newly diagnosed patients.
We were delighted that we were in
a position to be able to increase the
initial £20,000 first pledged to KGH
to £50,000 following the Crazy Hats
Day. However a few months before
the Treatment Centre was due to be
opened in 2007 (it was originally
said to be ready in 2004) I received
an unexpected phone call at home
from Mr Stewart (Consultant). After exchanging pleasantries he asked me how much money I had? A strange request! I got my purse and told him – £7.59!! I laughed. Why did he want to know? He didn’t answer but went on to ask me what I would want if I was to visit the Treatment Centre as a patient. I joked that I would want his clinics to be running on time!
“Yes, but what else would you want?” I was confused and said I didn’t know.
“If my clinics were running late you’d want a hot drink wouldn’t you?” I told him I didn’t drink tea or coffee. Where was this going?
Mr Stewart then asked what I was doing the following morning and said if I wasn’t busy could I go over to the Treatment Centre to meet him? Yes. I was intrigued.
The next morning we met. At that time the Treatment Centre was a concrete shell. He explained what was going where and pointed
