Junior School again, and another with ‘our men’ and children from Wellingborough School – all different, but just as good. Sue went on to form a choir called ‘The Seagrave Singers’ and they too, put on concerts for us – all of them sell-outs. Peter from the CMVC told us his choir had been invited to be part a 1000 Male Voice Choir that would be performing at the Royal Albert Hall and got Marilyn and I tickets. Oh, my goodness! 1000 men singing their hearts out – my Dad would have LOVED it!!!
Later, as the years rolled by we formed a Crazy Hats
Choir, under the direction of Sue who trained us at the
office and prepared us to sing publicly – twice – at All
Saints Church in Wellingborough where we first sang with
her choir and another smaller choir she trained – ‘The “ Frutones – and again in 2018 when we, together with the
school choir from Park Junior School In Wellingborough, organised a Thanksgiving Service – something I had always wanted to do.
Our ladies loved singing and were thrilled to be part of a choir. Performing publicly was nerve racking but, like the Fashion Show that Linda and Elaine put on, it was so rewarding to see them – our choir – sing with so much feeling and a sense of personal fulfilment – and much enjoyment.
The Thanksgiving Service was yet another huge success and something very different. With tremendous help from Pat Thomas (Committee Member), who had close ties with the Church and other Church personnel (Bob and another ‘Bill’), we held it in October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a month where we had been out and about raising awareness of breast cancer with our Pink Bow Project (read on to learn more about this). On the day of the Service volunteers came into The Church to put up and display pink knitted bows and bunting – everywhere! The children from Park Junior School, where one of our Committee Members (Maria) worked and where I knew the Head (David Tebbutt) from table tennis, sang their song choices beautifully, as our choir did, and we sang together – all wearing specially designed t-shirts and pink bows. The Programme also included one of Sue’s protégés (Henry) playing his violin, appropriate readings and poems, hymns for the congregation to join in and prayers, all proudly read by our ladies, Father Tony of All Saints, the Mayor of Wellingborough, with my former GP – David Lawrence, playing the organ and Headteacher ‘David’ compering the evening. Simon Weldon (then the Chief Executive of Kettering General Hospital) had kindly agreed to come along and spoke warmly at the end when everyone was invited to the front to place a pink bow on a large wooden heart we had made – to remember a loved one. (Simon had previously attended our lively Coffee Mornings and he and I had met several times to discuss the ‘Spruce It Up Project’ we had in mind for the Treatment Centre – that is still in progress in 2023).
