‘Pink Bow Project’...
Here’s what Marilyn’s had to say when she spoke to the congregation at the Thanksgiving Service:
“I’ve been thinking,” says Glennis.
“Oh, no!” we all say.
Whenever we hear Glennis utter such words we
know another crazy idea has been thought of – an idea that we know WILL happen; an idea that WILL be developed and an idea that WILL involve all of us, and many more people too; an idea that may be time-consuming but an idea that WILL succeed and WILL be fun!
So what was on her mind this time?
Glennis enjoys knitting, and whilst in Yorkshire earlier this year, she became so absorbed in her hobby, she wanted others to share her enjoyment. Her imagination went into overdrive, for in a magazine she had read that ‘Yarn Bombing’ (a street art showing colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk) was now becoming very popular and had seen a large knitted pink bow that
someone had made.
Back at the office Glennis talked through her idea with many of the
Coffee and Chat ladies, many of whom were avid knitters and knitted a lot of things for charity. Glennis talked about knitting for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. ‘Josie’ showed much interest and the next week came back to excitedly show everyone a very simple pattern she had tried to knit a pink bow – the ‘pink bow’ symbolic of breast cancer. Josie’s pattern was so simple – with double knitting wool, to knit a twelve inch
strip using twelve stitches, then sew the two sides of the strip together, twist it and – voila! – a pink bow is created!
We posted the idea on Facebook, the idea to invite a FEW people to knit pink bows for us so that we could use them to dispay and decorate a ‘few’ areas in the county with pink bow bunting, to raise breast cancer awareness in a different way and to promote the charity.
Oh, the powers of social media! The powers of Facebook!
Within 48 hours we had received over 56,000 hits with people all over
