Recharging Your Mind
How Allotments Bring Peace and Clarity
Towards the end of the 1980s, two American psychologists, Rachel and Stephen Kaplan, suggested that mental fatigue and concentration could be improved by spending time in, or simply looking at, nature. The reason for this is that the capacity of the brain to focus on a given task is limited and prolonged attention results in ‘attention fatigue’.
In the modern world, with all the screens, noises and tasks pulling us in different directions, it is not surprising our minds can get tired and stressed out. Fortunately, there is a simple and enjoyable way to give your mind a break and make it feel better. It’s called cognitive restoration, and it’s all about finding a peaceful place to relax your brain. One really good way to do this is by having an allotment – a small piece of land where you can grow plants, fruit and vegetables.
On your allotment you are surrounded by greenery, with colourful flowers and the smell of the soil and plants
all around you. That’s the magic of an allotment. It’s a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of your daily life and let your mind unwind and become cognitively restored.
One big benefit of having an allotment is that it helps reduce stress and anxiety. When you’re busy taking care of your plants, your body releases chemicals that make you feel happier and more relaxed. The gentle tasks of planting seeds, watering your plants, and taking out the weeds have a calming effect on your mind. Plus, being outside in nature is like a breath of fresh air for your brain.
HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED HOW BEING IN A PARK OR NEAR TREES MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER?
Well, that’s because humans have
a special connection with nature. Allotments give you the chance to strengthen that connection. When you touch the soil, smell the plants, and watch your garden grow, your brain thanks you by making you feel good. It’s like nature’s way of giving your mind a friendly hug.
Another good thing about allotments is that they’re like a mini gym for your brain. When you dig, plant, and take care of your plants, you’re also getting some exercise. This exercise is not just good for your body, but it’s also like
a workout for your brain cells. They become more active and healthy, which

helps you think better and remember things more easily. It’s like giving your brain a tune-up!
We should always remember that allotments are not just about plants; they’re about people too. When you have an allotment, you become part
of a community of fellow growers. You can share tips, stories, and maybe even swap some of your extra veggies. Being around others who share your love
for growing can make you feel like you belong somewhere, and that’s really good for your mood.
In a nutshell, cognitive restoration is
all about giving your brain a chance
to chill out and recharge. Allotments
are like little oases of peace where you can escape from the stresses of life. They help you feel less anxious, more connected to nature, and even smarter! Taking care of your allotment not only makes your surroundings beautiful but also brings beauty to your mind. So, if you’re looking for a way to make your mind feel better, get your hands dirty in your allotment. Your brain will thank you!
