used to my bags being in my room when I arrived, my bike being cleaned and prepped for the next day that I didn’t know how I would manage once the week ended. Back to earth with a bump, I suspected!!
On the nal day we rode from RAF Halton to Watford, accompanied by Dame Sarah Storey (Paralympic Gold Medallist) where we were met by 4 police escorts on motorbikes. They very ef ciently escorted through London, stopping all traf c, to St James Palace for a quick freshen up before riding down the Mall in arrowhead formation (couldn’t help myself), through the gates and onto the forecourt of Buckingham Palace where we were greeted by our families and lots more media. I then had the pleasure of being interviewed by Sky TV, chatted with Phillip Scho eld and Sir Chris Boardman, before being hosted by the Earl and Countess in the palace for lunch with our families.
I can honestly say this was an experience of a lifetime, one that I will never forget. It was an amazing week surrounded by a great group of people. The Countess made it look like a breeze, testament to the hard work she had put in, in the months building up to the event and was amazed by how far she had come on since starting. As for life post event, we are still in regular contact, meeting up fortnightly for a session, attending a reunion DofE team trip to the Velodrome and being invited round for Christmas
drinks and dinner nights for the DoE award at Windsor Castle. Clearly the event has had a great impact on her life as on her most recent birthday, she was ecstatic to receive a Wattbike from her husband, the Earl of Wessex.
Final thought from the week, the more you ride, the more cake you can eat!!!!!
