Air Cadets visit West Yorkshire Police Open Day
During the summer, cadets from 868 Squadron were fortunate to be able to attend the West Yorkshire Police Open Day at their Carr Gate complex. The visit was designed to showcase many aspects of
the various departments’ work through a series of demonstrations, explanations and acting out a variety of scenarios.
During the visit the cadets were introduced to the practical aspects of the varied work of the police service in Yorkshire, including:
• PublicOrder,withhorsesandofficersinriot
gear being deployed to control an unruly mob of
civilians (the whole group of visitors)
• Snifferdogsseekingouthiddendrugsina
mock-up street scene
• CrimeSceneInvestigation(CSI),wherethe
team had set up a 'crime scene' for the visitors to investigate and assess and provide feedback on their findings to the experts.
• Anarmedresponseraidingahousetotakearmed and aggressive suspects into custody
• Surveillance Drones; some of the latest technology in support of policing
• Traffic police who mounted a car chase scenario, chasing and containing a suspect vehicle and deploying a “stinger” to bring the vehicle to a halt
• Police dogs and handlers who were deployed from the National Police Air Support Helicopter to tackle and arrest armed suspects
All-in-all, an excellent and exciting visit showcasing the wide range and scope of day-to-day policing in the county.
The visit was also attended by Deputy Chief Constable Catherine Hankinson and members of her family, and she posed for a picture with the visiting Air Cadets.
My favourite parts of the day were the police car chase and the helicopter
Cadet Lexi Foggo wrote this about the experience of the visit: “When I went with other cadets, I felt welcomed and respected as soon as we arrived. All of the police staff were lovely and nice. The first thing I loved was how they took time for the introduction presentation. As we made our way outside, I noticed a lot of activities that we would be doing later. I could tell they put a lot of time into the animals when they put the performance of all the stuff that happens
on a day-to-day basis it was amazing. My favourite parts of the day were the police car chase and the helicopter because they put a lot of effort into it all and I also liked the crime scene situation when you had to take notes of the body and evidence that led to the crime.”
GOLD CYBER COURSE
Recently SGT Oliver Kimber of 250 (Halifax) Squadron completed the Gold Cyber course at RAF Cosford, which was delivered by the No 1 Radio School. Throughout the course, Sgt Kimber delved into advanced topics such as network security, cryptography, ethical hacking and incident response.
