110 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL LANCERS (QUEEN ELIZABETHS’ OWN)
The King’s School Grantham Combined Cadet Force
The contingent has been very busy developing 150+ cadets in the Combined Cadet Force ethos, by undertaking many exciting and stimulating activities throughout our yearly train- ing programme. Shooting as usual was high on the agenda, with cadets attending the range at RAF Cranwell on a regular basis, which allowed strong development of marksmanship and skill at arms, allowing Staff Sergeant Instructor (SSI) Pulfrey to pick our Cadet Skill Arms Meeting (CADSAM) team. The CADSAM team participated in the 2018 competition, acquitting them- selves well in the 7th Infantry Brigade competition.
Other activities to stimulate our cadets have been canoeing, where Captain Dunlop on Rutland Water trained cadets in one and two star British Canoe Union qualifications. A visit to a medal parade at Catterick was made at the invitation of The Royal Lancers, the cadets enjoyed climbing all over the Scimitar, seeing current issued weapons, and then were treated to a curry lunch. An exciting day was had by all.
A superb dining out night for our senior cadets was held in our old School Hall, during which Brigadier Matthew Lowe MBE from Regional Command gave a resounding speech, presented awards, including a 5th Bar to the Cadet Forces Medal (CFM) to our Contingent Commander Lieutenant Colonel R M Ogg.
Summer Camp meant a long journey to Crowborough for 40 ca- dets and adult staff, lots of activities were undertaken, including a 24 hour exercise with cadets living in improvised shelters and cooking 24 hour ration packs and experiencing long hot summer days, “take more water with it “took a real meaning”!! Culmina- tion of Summer Camp was coming 2nd overall in the competi- tions held on the last day of camp but we did please our Staff Sergeant Instructor by winning the drill competition. What a cheer was heard from him!! Exercise COLDSTART was held recently at Wyville for our new joiners, during which they were trained in how to build improvised shelters and live in the field.
Poppy collection was high on the agenda too, as cadets sold poppies during the week running up to Armistice Sunday, with our Royal Lancers Army Cadets, plus RAF Combined Cadets parading through Grantham as part of our town parade on Ar- mistice Sunday, which was then followed by a day planting trees to form a hedgerow, to be known as the Captain Albert Ball VC hedgerow (an old boy of King’s School) as part of Operation RE- FLECT in conjunction with the Woodland Trust at East Keal. Finally, we also participated in the “There but not there silhou-

ettes” remembrance activities, they were placed in St Wulfram’s Church Grantham on the school remembrance day and in the Headmaster’s garden, for all to see.
My thanks also to The Royal Lancers who have now built new relationships with us, thanks to Major James Hood for stepping
expertly into Major Will Greig’s shoes.
