 En Guard. As the cold weather battered the country, and we were firmly in the grips of “the Beast from the East” the Royal Lancers Rear Operation Group stood up to assume con- trol of the Regiment’s firm base commitment. The chosen few remained back in the United Kingdom for what turned out to be a glorious summer of guard, physical training, guard, the tank park, guard, driving up and down the A1 to Brize Norton and if stuck for something to do, a little more guard.
With Captain Cassidy and Squadron Sergeant Major Hill con- stantly grappling with the enigma that was the manning, the real work was happening on the tank park. Corporal Watson (who peaked with 80 vehicles on his flick) worked tirelessly with Sergeant Palmer (when he wasn’t dealing the next G1 crisis) to manage the fleet and keep everyone, including 12 new troopers arriving from Bovington, busy and motivated. Physical train- ing, under Sergeant Milakovic and Staff Sergeant Burnell, trans- formed with the introduction of a new regime in preparation for the imminent overhaul of the Army’s physical employment
