Captain Hugh Hemsley tries out his lovely new lederhosen in preparation for German night in the ITC Mess
have been out stalking roe buck in the Yorkshire countryside around Ripon, ensuring the freezer is always well stocked with venison. Members of The Ri es Cottage also participate very actively in the Catterick shoot, enjoying some fantastic sporting action on the grouse moors and pheasant drives run by fellow Ri eman Major Mark Fleccia in the North East of the Dales. A frequent visitor and one time member of The Ri es Cottage Major Will Hignett is also a frequent patron of this excellent club.
The social calendar has also been eventful, co-or- dinated by food and entertainments of cer Captain Ian Cullen. A cottage trip to the Bedale point to point in April set the bar high at the start of the season, and things have gone from strength to strength. The Ri es Cottage summer party was described as “unforgettable”, with a number of kegs of local ale brought in and a 40kg pig cooked underground to feed the forty or so guests. There has also been a cottage trip to the Edinburgh festival, linking in with fellow Ri emen Captains Rob Baggot La Velle and Andrew Jenkinson, previous members of the ITC Mess who unfortunately didn’t quite make the grade for the cottage during their time in North Yorkshire. With a ski trip booked to St Anton over the Christmas break, numerous barbeques and smaller events in the margins throughout the year, the social component is thriving.
Community engagement of cer Captain Kenji Ara has involved members of The Ri es Cottage more intimately with Yorkshire life, to the undoubted enrichment of all concerned. Spennithorne cricket club play in the Theakston Nidderdale league, and have been blessed(?) with the talents of all members of the cottage when required, with Captain Ara a mainstay in the side. Indeed, Captain Ara has been busy, representing the Regiment at the Barnsley remembrance service, and at the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Somme 100 memorial in Hudders eld. In addition, in one of his more
punchy tasks to date, he was the inspecting of cer for a Ri es Cadet detachment at Fitzwilliam near Wake eld. Captains Cullen, Ara and Hemsley also attended the fabulous Durham Light Infantry cocktail evening, accompanied by Major Dean Murch and his wife Julie, and Serjeant Major ‘Lanny’ Lansdowne and his partner Helen.
Overall it has been an outstanding year in North Yorkshire, and the future looks bright. The newest member of The Ri es Cottage, Lieutenant Jamison, is pushing to be millennial/metro member, with his bewildering array of body lotions, hair products, physical enhancement creams, and his ridiculous sel e stick. Captain Tom Quayle will shortly take over from Captain Hugh Hemsley with the latter’s return to the 2nd Battalion. The Ri es Cottage continues to be a forward looking, innovative institution in this lovely part of the world.
