AMS Wakeboarding
LCpl A Eccleston
In May of this year a trawl went out for AMS personnel to attend the first Wakeboarding grass roots training day. My SDO passed this onto me which I replied a non-hesitant “YES”, smiling like a cheshire cat as this was right up my street and something I had always wanted to try. I wasn’t too sure what to expect but I was very excited, well, all apart from the anticipation of face planting a freezing cold lake, but I was up for the challenge.
The training day was at The Quays Wake & Ski Park in Surrey. It was a lovely newly refurbished venue with a cool, chilled vibe and the owners were lovely. There were ten of us who attended ranging from beginners to the more experienced boarder. We were given two time slots on the water, 15 minutes on the cables and 15 minutes behind the boat. It is recommended to try the cables before the boat if you are a beginner but
due to the numbers and time slots, I got allocated a boat slot first (yay!!).
After the initial shock of the cold water,
I was ready and raring to go. The coach explained exactly what I needed to do and what was going to happen which really put me at ease. And then I was off, knees tucked in between elbows being pulled along the water then slowly, slowly, I was up! I couldn’t

quite believe my luck, but after a short 5 seconds which felt like a lifetime, SLAP, FACE PLANT, which wasn’t quite as bad as anticipated. The boat then came around to collect me and I was off again constantly being coached on my body position and stance. This time I managed to get up for
a good few minutes and for the rest of my time on the water. I was surprisingly shocked at how easy I found it with it being my first time.
Next up were the cables. They are much easier and quicker to stand up and ride the water with than behind the boat and are especially good for improving your riding and learning new tricks.
Overall, the day for me was fantastic. I met some lovely people from the AMS and it was nice to socialise and be let loose from the Dental Centre for the afternoon to try something new.
As the AMS Wakeboarding is in its first year it is not yet eligible for funding. A £20 contribution pp was needed to help fund the day. The total cost of the day pp would have been £57 so this was a good saving for all. If anyone is interested in going to the Quays in their own time, they do offer military discount.
I highly recommend that EVERYBODY
gives Wakeboarding a go if they get the opportunity and I would like to say a big thank you to Capt Rebecca Lillywhite
for organising an amazing day out and introducing me to this brilliant sport. If you would like to find out more about AMS Wakeboarding events or how to join the AWWA (Army water-ski & wakeboarding association) please join the ‘AMS Wakeboarding’ Facebook group and spread the word to friends who may be interested too. Another point of contact is Capt Rebecca Lillywhite, RAMC.
