Sport and Adventurous Training
The battalion has continued to build on recent sporting success by maintaining a commitment to sport. Worthy of note is that 3 RIFLES was the highest placed infantry battalion in the UK Army Sports Trophy 2015, clearly demonstrating the talent of individual Ri emen and the battalion’s commitment to sport.
The Orienteering team are the current Infantry Orienteering Champions and the Cross Country team placed second in the 51 Infantry Bde Major Units cross country title, clear evidence that the daily jaunts over the Pentland Hills have not been wasted. The battalion sports shooting team continue to produce strong results under the expert eye of LCpl Dey from the LAD.
3 RIFLES Golf Club has gone from strength to strength, holding a well-attended championship, won by CSjt McIntosh. He has been selected to represent the Infantry, having achieved  fth overall in the Infantry Championship against a very strong  eld.
Individual sporting success has seen several Ri eman gain deserved recognition. Sjt Horner represented the Army in the Inter-Services Surf Kayak Championships and was also selected to represent the Army at the Inter Services Kayak Polo Championships; Sjt Hayes was selected to attend the Amateur Cycling World Championships in Denmark with the Army Team and LCpl Durrand has also become a vital component of the Infantry Basketball Team. LCpl Holden and Rfn Spreadbury are regulars within the Infantry football set up, Rfn Crooks and Hindmarsh were selected to represent the Army Junior Athletics Team, with Capt Wootton, Sjt McDelling and Rfn Dannatt were selected for the Infantry Rugby Team on numerous occasions.
Rfn Duncan was named by the Army Rugby Union Referees Society as their Referee of the Year, with the award presented to him by World Cup winner Jason Leonard OBE at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. As a result he was selected to be an assistant referee at Twickenham for the build-up game to the Army vs. Navy game.
On the boxing front, Rfn Hills was selected to join the Army Boxing team following the 3 RIFLES Inter Coy boxing event held in November 2015, and LCpl Nealon is now ranked No. 3 in England in the Light Heavyweight Division.
Inter company boxing
LCpl Smith (RAP) and Pte Whitbread (AGC SPS Det) won the Ladies Scottish Region of the British Army Warrior Fitness competition (with a single days’ notice!). LCpl Smith later came 2nd overall in the competition at  nal held in Aldershot. She also added to these successes with silver in shot put and bronze in high jump at the Army’s individual athletics competition.
Despite a busy forecast of events the battalion has maintained its focus and commitment to sports and can boast a wide and varied participation in numerous sports with some notable successes. 3 RIFLES will endeavour to maintain its current standing within Army Sport.
