weeks. During the Battle of Wool Heath, an arduous PT lesson consisting of logs, stretchers and forced marches. One notable event was Dame Kelly Holmes being appointed as the Honorary Colonel of the Royal Armoured Centre Training Regiment (RACTR)
A role in which she takes great pride and actively engages with the unit. She too, has been put through her paces on a Battle PT session.
The Commanders Cup is a separate event for the wings and schools’ permanent staff to compete for annual glory and is heavily contested by all ARMCEN personnel. It gives all Garrison personnel the opportunity to compete at a sporting discipline to encourage the attributes of a sport in a healthy, safe and competitive environment. It consists of various sporting events (duathlon, water polo, military superstars etc) throughout the year.
Having reinstated the Garrison Sports board, ARMCEN has seen a meteoric rise in the performance and attendance of sports. The ARMCEN football team won the Army Minor Units Cup. The X-country team has been well established and has made strides in competing at Army level events and several members across the ARMCEN now representing at various levels. Mr Gavin Pritchard, a Babcock PTI has been collecting silverware for the Cross-Country team, winning the Vets individual winners title for major units. The team also took away the team title for the season.
Adventurous Training participation has increased with skiing, scuba diving, mountaineering along with the standard Type 2 multi activity weeks taking place. The scuba diving was touching as a team laid a wreath on a submerged Valentine Tank in Studland Bay. This tank sank on a pre-D-Day exercise in 1944 and all the RAC crew were lost. The major AT event this year is the mountaineering expedition to Mera Peak (6476m). This arduous and challenging trip will see a ten-man team summit the highest trekking peak in the world over a month long exped.
The Gymnasium used its facilities to help assist the potential future members of the RAPTC, which saw members of units across the SW regional area conduct a Pre-Selection day.
All were firmly put through their paces under the watchful eyes of members of the RAPTC. A Bde Non-Swimmers Course followed to assist with ensuring that all military individuals are afforded the opportunity to undertake the skills of swimming.
As the new PES standards and military assessments is upon us, several RFT(S) trainer days were conducted in order to ensure that all RAPTC, AAPTIs and SIO PTIs are current and competent in its delivery. We have to ‘practice what we preach’ and all individuals were put through the test so they had a clear understanding of what is expected from them and the physical effort required to pass.
This has been a very busy and rewarding year, with the foundations having been laid for all elements of Physical Development. With the introduction of PES, the expectation of sporting success and the Mera Peak challenge the ARMCEN will forever be moving forward and striving to remain at the forefront.
