Over the last year the RAPTC Rowing Club has continued to promote rowing within the Army and develop as a squad, both indoor and on the water. On the back of the success
from the 2017 Joint Service Regatta 8+ win, another fantastic training camp was completed in Cardiff in preparation for the 2018 JSR, which saw some new RAPTCIs’ joining the team and learning to row. Unfortunately, history wasn’t repeated in the 2018 JSR as it was halted after only 3 races due to high winds.
Jan 19 saw 4 team members compete at the RAF Rowing Club - Head of the River Race in Danesfield against both UKAF and RAF rowers. Capt (MAA) Jackson and WO2 (QMSI) Southern- Naylor raced as a double in the open category and placed 4th, whilst racing first time together in the novice double category was WO2 (QMSI) Percival and WO2 (QMSI) Kinsley, who placed 3rd.
Indoor rowing continues to grow and is now recognised as a Cat 2 sport, which is due to the success and popularity of the Regional Command Indoor Rowing League (RCIRL). The RAPTC have some strong representation in the RCIRL; in particular, newly badged male and female RAPTCIs’, who are not members of the rowing club. You are all welcome to join us on the water!
9 members of the team have completed the British Rowing ‘Go Row’ indoor rowing course. With this qualification all team members gained valuable knowledge for improving their own technique, but more importantly can now use this in teaching others for personal fitness or for competing at indoor rowing.
Members of the team raced at the 2018 British Rowing Indoor Championships (BRIC) on 10 Dec 18 at Lee Valley Velodrome representing both the Army and the RAPTC. During this event the first ever Inter Services relay race took place and was organised by RAPTC personnel. It was a huge success and a very tight race that saw the RAF team clinch the win.
The RAPTC Rowing Club are dedicated in pushing Army rowing forwards and currently have several personnel sitting on the Army Rowing Club committee. The future looks bright for both Army and RAPTC rowing. Looking forward, 3 RAPTCIs’ will be attending the Level 2 on the water rowing coaching course and coaching on the 2019 Army Learn to row courses. For any RAPTCI’s interested in rowing or wanting to know more information about Army rowing please contact WO2 (QMSI) Paul Percival.
