‘An Historical Year for the RAPTC’
I assumed Command of the Army School of Physical Training and its associated areas of responsibility, Army School of Physical Training (Germany), Army Sub Aqua Dive Centre and the JS Adventurous Training Centre (Llanrwst), North Wales on the 9th of June 2014. Sadly the last 3 training establishments have now closed after a painstaking process as a result of the Strategic Defence Review and the Army 2020 Plan.
That said - the need for Mainstream Physical Training Instructors, Adventurous Training Instructors and
Exercise Rehabilitation Instructors is greater now than
ever before. As such I took the initiative to identify a Unit further north to cope with the increased demands whilst taking into account the nuances/demands of the Army Reserve Force. Following detailed research, scoping and planning, the Army School of Physical Training in Grantham opened up with a ne ceremony on 18 April 2016 with the rst All Arms Physical Training Instructors Course

Of course - none of the aforementioned would have been possible if it wasn’t for the professionalism, diligence and quality of my Staff. All of the Staff and Of cers who are now assigned to the ASPT and to the ASPT (Grantham) are those who are selected to do so and possess the most enduring talent and potential to shape the future of our Corps. Without doubt - my Military and Civilian Staff alike are delivering a ne account of themselves on
a daily basis and are making a real difference. I commend them all to you. I now leave it to my Staff to tell their part in this historical year of change for the RAPTC.

“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our
United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) to engage our students as part of this change. By the time that this edition of the MBS goes to print we will be 2/3 of the way through this change process and cantering towards rst delivery of the new look AAPTI syllabus.
Pivotal in the success of this change is the training wing, but more importantly the small team of highly motivated RAPTCIs that make up the delivery staff. This team will be at the forefront of changing culture by leading, coaching and inspiring those students under their tutelage. For the staff themselves there will be a huge developmental
curve to ascend in preparation for this, but a more dedicated team there isn’t, and I am immensely proud of what they achieve at the ASPT on a daily basis. Thank you.

No one can argue that the ASPT has not done everything in support of the mission over the years, delivering high quality, motivated, professional AAPTIs and RAPTCIs to the Field Army. However, the PTI review written by Maj Al Humes in 2015, gave the ASPT an ideal opportunity to change its thinking on how we train and develop our AAPTI and RAPTCI students to deliver PT.
I won’t steal Capt (Tom) Sawyer’s sandwiches, as right now he is neck deep in training design, developing and utilising the very best educational models and industry standard in collaboration with
