TOM PETTETT 1915 – 2015
WILLIAM BERNARD WILSON
Born: 01/01/1914 – Died: 01/11/2014
Bernard had fond and proud memories of his war time association with the APTC especially his time as a CSMI at the Army School in Aldershot during 1945. He volunteered for the RQSC and joined up in September 1939. Bernard transferred to the APTC in September 1940 and enjoyed more than 5 years with the Corps.
Bernard was born and lived all his 100+ years in Bolton, Lancashire – except for the war years. A life-long Roman Catholic he was the second child of Robert and Anne Wilson. He grew up with his brothers Joe & Robin and sisters Mary, Annie, Rachael & Kath
in Bolton, spending his childhood years in the parishes of St. William’s and later St. Peter & Paul’s where the family attended church and school. He passed his 11+ exam but the family could not afford the cost of sending him to Grammar School. His secondary education nished early and he obtained his rst job at the age of 14 as an apprentice at Wadsworth’s Engineering Works near the centre of town.
He met his future wife, Eva, in the mid 1930’s and they married in June 1938. Like many people of their generation their hopes and dreams as a young couple were rudely interrupted one year later by the advent of the Second World War. After Bernard was demobbed in November 1945 they started their family with sons Christopher and Stephen born in 1946 and 1949 respectively.
The family moved into St. Osmund’s parish, Bolton in 1951.
In his working life after serving his time at Wadsworth’s, Bernard moved to Moseley’s Joinery Firm, and worked his way up to become a Foreman Joiner at Porter’s and nally for almost the last 20 years, the Building Supervisor and Manager at Sunter’s, retiring from there at the age of 67.
Bernard was a proud gardener and grew and ate the ‘super foods’ blackcurrants, blue berries and strawberries. He also led a very active life style that was developed
