HQ 11 INFANTRY BRIGADE & HQ SOUTH EAST
Capt (MAA) S Irving RAPTC – SO3 PD
During the past year the staff at HQ 11 Inf Bde & HQ SE have faced the trials and tribulations that have arisen during the successful merger of 2 and 145
Bde to become the Army’s rst Adaptive Force Brigade. The merger involved the transition from a Regional Brigade to an operationally deployable Brigade with ve Infantry Units under its command without losing any of its Regional responsibilities.
During the early part of 2015, staff from the Headquarters
under the command of Brigadier Hughes, deployed
to Sierra Leone to take over the Headquarters of OP GRITROCK, the initial deployment was for 6 months,
however this was extended to over 8 months. Those deployed provided a one star headquarters which commanded 300 men and women from RFA ARGUS who worked tirelessly alongside DfID to help the Sierra Leone people.
The Geographic’s of the 11 Bde AOR is massive with over 19500 regular and reserve personnel located within its boundaries. The main focus for the PD Branch over the last year was to provide support to the 2 star PD branches by delivering PD assurance to their subordinate units located within the 11 Bde footprint. Throughout all the units I visited it was hugely pleasing to see the extremely professional way that the RAPTCIs are delivering their
respective roles and equally humbling to listen to the high level of praise and admiration they all receive.
I am now coming to the end of a very frantic two years with the Bde and to try and sum this up in a few short sentences without possessing the literacy skills of William Shakespeare is a challenge! To put this into some sort of perspective, when I arrived at the Bde there were only 6 regular serving members of staff and during my rst staff meeting we discussed what cakes were on offer for Friday’s coffee morning. However, the Bde is now fully manned with 36 regular staff that are fully immersed in the AFORM training cycle and cakes have been replaced
with water and fruit mornings!
There have been numerous highlights over this year for me but one of the standout moments was the delivery of the inaugural 11 Bde AAPTI Study Period. Much of the credit for the organisation of this event goes to the then branch FTRS QMSI, Matt Wigley; over 70 AAPTIs from across the Bde attended the Study Period, topics mirrored those delivered during the Regional RAPTC study periods. The AAPTIs also received practical sessions in the delivery of injury prevention exercises and functional movement screening; these topics were delivered superbly by the ERIs at the RRU and PCRF Aldershot.
