Another busy year with 10 QOGLR, having now fully established myself within this very proud unit, I am constantly amazed at how committed they are. From Trail- Walker where they only just missed out on breaking their own record, to an Everest Expedition which turned into disaster relief as they were on the mountain during the Nepal earthquake.
As I realised on arrival it is very important to fully embrace the Gurkha culture and all their traditions, even if this does mean losing all the PTIs’ while they celebrate Dashain (Gurkha Christmas) and the gambling season, at least it gave me chance to catch up with work.
The unit was honoured to host Her Royal Highness Princess Anne as part of the Gurkha 200 celebration on 01 July 15. This was an eventful day where all members of the unit were given an opportunity to meet her as were a select number of the wives an experience they found very honoured to be a part of.
With the arrival of a new Commander and RSM, there has been a new drive to achieve sporting excellence, there is no doubt the Trail-Walker record will be in their sights as are a number of other competitions, I am con dent a number of new trophies will soon be in the unit trophy cabinet.
The Commander’s Sword Competition continues to be the drive for competition amongst the Squadrons. During the 10 QOGLR 57th birthday celebrations the tug of war competition took place. This drew the crowds in as all the families cheered on their husbands and dads, watching Gurkha soldiers compete against
each other is something I recommend, defeat is not a word they like to use, it certainly was an interesting day.
The look forward is the cross country competition, which I also look forward to competing in; hopefully the sight of an RAPTC female leading the way will not dishearten them too much. A Sports Fair was recently held where over 20 sports were showcased in the gym and was launched with the prime intent of offering every serving member a chance to continue to get as much out of Army life with the secondary intent of talent spotting. We had some QOGLR favorites but also plenty of new opportunities from road biking and tennis to boxing which are all enjoying a fabulous uptake on Wednesday sports afternoons. Two members of 10 QOGLR competed in Taekwondo at the very highest level of the
