Tri Service sport in 51X continues to grow from strength to strength, with more solid links and good representation from the Royal Navy. The RAPTCIs from within 51X are actively involved as the various sports secretaries, proactively encouraging participation across all units.
The sports represented within the brigade are:
EXERCISE SNOW LION
Exercise Snow Lion was held between 26 Feb – 06 Mar 16 also in Aviemore. A total of 81 personnel attended Ex Snow Lion, broken down into 64 Alpine skiers and 17 snowboarders. This was also a combination of regular soldiers, reserves and UOTC cadets. This is an exercise that is also gathering momentum and we are looking forward to a greater participation in 2017.
STRATHPUFFER 24 HOUR MOUNTAIN BIKE EVENT
In between these events, 51X HQ entered two 4 man teams into the Strathpuffer 24 hour mountain bike competition. Comprising of a combination of regular and reserve soldiers. This is an annual mountain bike event, held in Strathpeffer, in the Scottish Highlands, which is a real test of endurance. More than 800 people took part in this epic 24 hour endurance event, which consisted of an 11 km course, of extremely steep climbs, over tree roots and a quagmire of mud that progressively became worse as the event went on. However the teams managed to complete an admirable 20 laps, nishing in the top 40 out of 800 competitors.

ARMY Vs NAVY BOXING EVENT
After some close liaisons with our Navy PT counterparts in Scotland, it was agreed to hold an Army Vs Navy boxing competition. After some deliberating, the date was nally con rmed for 10th March 2016. The next challenge was agreeing on exactly how many bouts, boxers and weight categories we could realistically get together for this very prestigious event. We jointly agreed to programme 8 bouts on the night with weight categories also being con rmed. This outstanding event was hosted by kind permission of Commodore Mike Walliker OBE Royal Navy, Commander Faslane, in HMS Neptune Helensburgh, Scotland. The attention to detail was rst class and the night was a huge success. After

EXERCISE SNOW CUB
In addition to these sports, the G7 PD branch (Capt Young & QMSI Beattie, at the time of writing) organised several winter sports activities, these included Exercise Snow Cub, which was a Ski Foundation Level 1(SF1) quali cation, introducing complete novices to downhill skiing. This was held in the Cairngorms Mountain Range Aviemore, Scotland between 17Jan – 05 Feb 16. 78 students attended this exercise, with a combination of regulars, reserves and UOTC personnel. Due to the unpredictable Scottish weather conditions, several days training were lost, however a total of 28 students eventually gained the SF1 quali cation. This was great preparation for the Exercise Snow Lion, which was aimed at an introduction to downhill racing.
