After a year on the hot shot
crew, Winnie considered

training as a “smoke jumper,”
an elite group of specially
trained wildland firefighters
who are inserted at the site of
fire by parachute. But she got

an offer from the U.S. Forest
Service to work in its civil
engineering section, taking

care of forest roads, building
bridges, and managing
transportation through forests.
She did that job for seven
years, then decided to finish

her education.

From there, she took a full-
time job as a professional

Specialist. Each time, she was
the first, or one of the first,
women in the role. At one

point, she served as a manager
of a vermiculite mine in the
Montana mountains.

“I didn’t plan any of this, but
all these different experiences
really helped me when I got
into upper management,” she
said. “I knew a lot because I

had done a lot.” After careers as firefighters, Winnie and Steve As manager of the Withlacoochee Forestry Center
created a garden sanctuary for plants, birds, in Brooksville, Winnie (center) coordinated and
