became a collaboration. The looks feature some pieces from the girls’ real closets and their real styles. They are right there alongside me as I put looks together, decide settings, make a route, and edit pictures. They had a say and ideas and got to play with the formation of the book with me.
Girls’ Locker Room is meant to showcase many types of GIRL. Please note, however, by no means does this book showcase ALL TYPES OF GIRLS. All these women are American, between the ages of 14-26, English-speaking, middle or upper-middle class, able-bodied girls. There are only a handful of women of color and the book does not feature a single trans woman.
Girls’ Locker Room features girls of all sexualities: straight, gay, bisexual, asexual, and others. It features girls of fluid gender. It features girls of different shapes and sizes. It features girls of different religions and political parties. It features smart girls, girls who are fighting the good fight. It features my friends and the girls I love.
This book is a section, only a sliver within the web of what it means to be a girl. By no means am I an expert. By no means am I done changing or done learning. And by no means is this all I have to contribute to the conversation.
Girls’ Locker Room shows girls looking like they do when they feel most confident and most like themselves. It shows a strong, fierce girl who isn’t going to sit down in the face of adversity. This girl raises her hand, speaks her mind, and gets her work done. This girl has goals, tries new things and looks fucking fly while doing it.
Thank you for reading and for looking. Let’s go.
