Page 12 - GIRLS' LOCKER ROOM
P. 12

Littering the white columns of the flyers lie graffiti that girls have added - tips and tricks on how to be a survivor. The pencil and pen etchings give advice such as “don’t go to this counselor, they don’t help,” “the northside hospital is best for processing rape kits,” and “whatever you do, don’t take a shower until you get your kit done.”
It seems as though girls’ locker room talk is created to specifically combat the result of boys’ locker room talk.
As saddening and disheartening at this is, this speaks volumes about girls. This secret, underground community of support on my university campus proves how even anonymously, girls look out for girls.
And that’s the cool thing about girls. Media seems to always try to pit us against each other, when in reality behind closed doors we’re just sharing lipstick and advice. Why be vindictive when you can be supportive?
If “locker room talk” means “boys will be boys,” then “locker room talk” also means “girls will be girls.” Girls who are fearless, strong, and badass. Girls who are not afraid to fight the good fight, and who are devoted to helping their fellow sisters. Girls who cry in bathroom stalls, and then walk out with their heads held high.
Girls.
