                                                     by Graeme Carroll

The NZ Indonesia Association is a long-established friendship organisation that was formed in 1964 with the aim
of promoting friendship and cultural understanding between the people of Indonesia and the people of New
Zealand. Guest Speakers for previous NZIA events have included Marja Lubeck MP and in February this year
Associate Minister of Health Hon Ayesha Verrall.

To celebrate NZIA 57th anniversary this year, we present 'Out of the Shadows' - an event to promote a positive
profile and to enhance our NZ-Indonesia relationship, especially at this time of coming out of the shadows of
Covid-19 through a cultural performance to be held at Parliament.

This builds on the “Connecting the Dots” Batik Exhibition held in Bowen House in November 2018, hosted by
Marja Lubeck MP, in partnership with the NZ Indonesia Association and with support from the Indonesian
             Embassy.

Wayang Kulit “Out of the Shadows” is a cultural performance event with expert Indonesian shadow puppeteer Dr
Joko Susilo from the University of Otago, Dunedin, and the superb Padhang Moncar gamelan orchestra based in
Wellington at Victoria University School of Music. This will be the first time that a Wayang Kulit and Gamelan
performance has been held in the Parliament building.

With opportunities to provide supportive social media coverage, including streaming of this event, it will link with
many others of the Indonesian community in NZ, as well as those further afield with an interest in Indonesia. This
includes opportunities for this event to be shown in Indonesia with its 270 million people. This approach is in line
with other initiatives that are being supported by the Ministry for Ethnic Communities.

The performance will take place at Parliament’s Beehive Theatrette on Tuesday, 28 September, from 5.30pm to
7.00pm. The adjoining area provides for an introductory gathering, ahead of everyone going into the theatrette.
The Introductory Function is from 5.30pm to 6.00pm. The actual Cultural Performance in the Theatrette: from
             6.00pm to 7.00pm.

Guest Speakers at the Introductory Function (subject to who is available):
Jacinda Ardern – Prime Minister & Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage
Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan - Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Ethnic Communities
Vanushi Walters MP - Chair of the Ethnic Communities Caucus Committee
Hon Jan Tinetti - Associate Minister of Education
                Marja Lubeck, MP
                HE Tantowi Yahya, Indonesian Ambassador.

Parliamentary Host: This event is hosted by Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Ethnic Communities Hon.
Priyanca Radhakrishnan with assistance from Marja Lubeck MP.

NZIA expects the audience of about 100 people to comprise a mix of people from within Parliament and from
outside, including a significant proportion from the Indonesian community in Wellington, as well as from MFAT
and diplomatic mission representatives. Please note: attendance is by RSVP only.
