Wayang performances in Java/Indonesia traditionally begin at 8 p.m
and continue throughout the night until 5 a.m in the morning. The
dhalang (puppeteer) sits cross-legged behind the shadow puppet
screen while conducting the gamelan orchestra with verbal cues or by
tapping his/her right foot against bronze plates. The dhalang also
dramatises the whole performance through narration, dialogue and
singing. He/she does NOT leave the screen for the entire performance
(no toilet stops)!
The stories for wayang kulit performances are based on the Indian epics
the Mahabharata and/or Ramayana.
Introduction
Arjuna is one of the major characters in the epic story Mahabharata. He is the
third son among the Pandawas, and is a powerful and invincible warrior. In this
wayang performance, Arjuna meditates at the top of the mountain Indrakila
and is given the name Ciptaning. He is given the magical arrow “Pasopati” by the
God Guru, which helps him to kill the evil King Niwatakawaca who wishes to
marry Supraba, the daughter of the God Indra. After several battles and some
deception, the evil King Niwatakawaca is killed and Ciptaning marries Supraba.
