Experiential Learning
Eco Exeter
Eco Exeter is a group that was started by a grade 9 student at South Huron District High School in May, 2019.
Rather than simply talk about sustainable ecosystems in science class, these students decided to take action in their community. They developed a logo and slogan, “Away from Pollution, Towards Solutions”, and in just six weeks their awareness campaign to reduce single use plastics was well on its way. They began with a fundraiser selling reusable produce bags and stainless steel straws.
The group of students then presented their ideas of reducing single use plastics to the Municipality of South Huron, to the County of Huron, and at a Climate Change event hosted by the Huron County Health Unit in Clinton.
They hosted a “bring your own mug” event at Tim Horton’s in Exeter and set up a booth at Your Independent Grocer for the summer months.
In September, 2019, four more classes at SHDHS have taken on initiatives to support Eco Exeter. The original group, of now grade ten students, also hosted an event in September and invited groups from every high school in the Avon Maitland District School
   Board to participate.
