A STORY IN STAINED GLASS

The Benedictine nuns have made their home at Kylemore since 1920. Before that the nuns lived in Belgium
in an ancient abbey in a town called Ypres but, sadly, it was bombed at the beginning of World War One
and, like thousands of others, the nuns had to flee and became refugees. After several years of searching for
a suitable home, the nuns found Kylemore Castle and moved here changing it from a castle to an abbey!

This is a mock stained-glass
window that is on display in
Kylemore today. It is used to
tell a simple version of the
nuns’ story.

The story reads from left to
right across the windows. A
stained-glass window is usually
made up of separate pieces of
coloured glass but this one was
drawn onto glass by a graphic
designer.

LET’S GET CREATIVE!

Self Portrait: Create your own self-portrait. Choose a medium: photography,
paint, collage etc. What do you want to show, what makes you unique? Choose
your expression, the background, what clothes you will wear and what items
you will include to say something about the type of person you are!

Commission: Ask a classmate to make a portrait of you. Explain to them how you want the world to see
you and let them create your portrait. Tell them how you want it to look: serious, funny, colourful, monotone?

Imagine a story in Glass: Create a design for a stained-glass window of your life story in a number of
pictures. What are the important elements of your life you would display? What about your first day at
school, your birthday party, the day you got a new pet, your favourite team winning the league; could you
put your house or the area you come from in the background?
