IMAGINE A GREAT ESTATE

When Mitchell Henry built his castle at Kylemore, he created a ‘great estate’ around it to supply all of his
needs! The estate provided everything from vegetables and milk to water and fuel for the castle and its
inhabitants.

Let’s take a closer look at some features of the map.

Some buildings just appear as tiny black marks so you have to look very closely!
We have added the images and photographs to
explain things more clearly.

The Farm: The farm had many buildings, including a sawmill, laundry, milking parlour, stables and poultry
sheds. There were fields to grow crops and meadows for animals to graze in.

The Post Office and Telegraph Office: The post office had a telegraph machine which sent messages quickly
around the world. The Henry family could send and receive letters and cards from their friends in England.

The Walled Garden: This is where all kinds of fruit, vegetables, exotic flowers and shrubs were grown.
We will learn more about them in a later section.

Coach Houses and the Fire House: As well as horse-drawn coaches and carriages, Kylemore also had horse
drawn fire engines and these were all stored in specially designed sheds built close to the castle.

The neo-Gothic Church: Perhaps the most beautiful private church in Ireland, it was built in honour of
Margaret Henry. Sadly, it is where the funeral of Mitchell and Margaret Henry’s daughter Geraldine took
place after she died in an accident in 1892.
