Perspective:
State of the
Marketplace
IoT devices are under serious attack, according to Kaspersky. They have
detected more then 100 million attacks in the first half of 2019. As
more devices are interconnected, the risk will continue to grow, both for
companies and for individuals. Many businesses ignore the risk IoT
attacks have on individuals, but for employees that conduct business at
home, or on their smart devices, IoT attacks at the home can easily spill
over to business operations. Ensure that your employees are informed
and protected if they work from home.
Ransomware attacks are continuing, with no end in sight. Criminals are
targeting enterprise organizations and municipalities, hoping for a large
payout from either the company being attacked, or their insurance
company. So the total number of attacks are declining as they are
turning their attention away from individual “mass-casualty” attacks and
are instead spending their resources targeting specific companies
hoping for a larger payout.
FIN7, the notorious hacking group behind such hits as Carbanak, SQLRat
and other malware targeting financial and hospitality industries has
rolled out a new set of tools and techniques for spreading malware.
Adding to their popular back-door software is a new suite of tools that
can intercept SSL traffic, delete data, run commands and modify
database code. Expect to see more of this group in 2020.
Finally some good news: google has announced a feature that should
enhance your security online by telling you which passwords may have
been compromised during security breaches targeting various sites and
advising immediate action. In addition to informing you about breaches,
the password manager will also prevent you from using bad passwords,
like “password,” or “123456,” which is something that people are still
doing.
