Perspective:
State of the
Marketplace
Its December and for many people, that means its time for online
shopping. Staying secure is something we should always be mindful of,
but during these holiday times it is important to be more proactive
when it comes to your online presence. With lots of advertisements for
sales being sent around phishing is a big concern. What might seem like
a harmless add or a website with great deals could suddenly turn out to
be someone stealing personal and sensitive data from you.
Some of these threats may not come from you email and could be from
apps on your phone. This month a new vulnerability called StandHogg
was found that affects android phones with certain apps on them. The
apps have been removed from the play store but affected devices could
be at risk. The vulnerability was found masking itself as a banking
application and could potentially steal money from your actual bank
account. It is always a good rule of thumb to not download applications
unless they are from a trusted source as well as highly downloaded and
reviewed.
This month we also saw large number of websites go down as the result
of operation IOS X. This operation saw over 30,000 domains be removed
from the internet that were guilty of things such as selling counterfeit
software and pharmaceuticals. These sites not only sold bogus products
but where also very likely to sell the information collected by their
clients. This is just a small chunk in the wide web that is the internet. It
is important to remember that if a site seems like it could be slightly
suspect then its better to not trust it.
