Web / Internet Threats

Online skimming: An emerging threat that requires urgent awareness and attention - A growing
threat that all merchants and service providers should be aware of is web-based or online
skimming. These attacks infect e-commerce websites with malicious code, known as sniffers or
JavaScript (JS) sniffers and are very difficult to detect, according to PCI Security Standards Council
and the Retail & Hospitality ISAC. Once a website is infected, payment card information is
“skimmed” during a transaction without the merchant or consumer being aware that the
              information has been compromised.

49% of all risky online transactions come from mobile devices - About half of all risky online
transactions appear to be coming from a mobile device, according to iovation. Specifically, in the
first half of 2019 49% of all risky transactions came from mobile devices, up from 30% in 2018, 33%
in 2017 and 25% in 2016. Iovation came to this conclusion by analyzing the 30 billion online
transactions it evaluated for fraud from January 2016 to June 30, 2019.

Vulnerabilities in WhatsApp can allow attackers to intercept and manipulate user messages -
Researchers from Israeli security company Check Point have identified three attack modes in
WhatsApp which can be exploited to intercept and manipulate users’ messages.Apparently, these
security issues were revealed to WhatsApp last year. However, they remain exploitable even after
              one year.

Ransomware attackers have gone from 'spray and pray' to 'slayin' prey' - Black Hat Ransomware
infections may be down, but only because attackers are getting better at targeting them. This is
according to a report from Malwarebytes, whose team said that when it comes to crimeware
figures, numbers can be deceiving. Malwarebytes Labs director Adam Kujawa said that, while
instances of consumer ransomware infections are down 25 per cent over the last year, attacks on
businesses are skyrocketing, up a whopping 235 per cent over the same period.
