More than half of login attempts on social media accounts are fraudulent. Social media platforms are now
major targets for criminals looking to make a quick hit, according to Arkose Labs' Q3 Fraud and Abuse report
released on Monday. The report found that more than half (53%) of social media login traffic is fraudulent, and
25% of all new account applications on social media are fraud. The report was based on 1.2 billion user
transactions including account registrations, logins and payments from financial services, e-commerce, travel,
social media, gaming, and entertainment. "We are in an era where online identity, intent, business, metrics
and content can all be faked. This can have serious security and financial repercussions for any business with
an online presence, especially as they try to balance risk management with the delivery of exceptional
customer experience," Kevin Gosschalk, CEO of Arkose Labs, said in a press release.

Singapore Police’s New Anti-scam Center Wants to Hit Scammers Where it Hurts. SINGAPORE: Scammers,
beware. That’s the message the Singapore Police Force (SPF) wants to convey as it introduced new tools such
as a new dedicated “nerve center” for scam-related crimes, as well as partnering industry players to more
effectively stop stolen money from falling into the perpetrators’ hands. On Friday (Aug 30), the police revealed
that the new Anti-Scam Centre (ASC) was set up within the Commercial Affairs Department on Jun 18 this year
and its focus is to disrupt scammers’ operations and help mitigate victims’ losses. In the latest mid-year crime
statistics for 2019, scams increased from 1,013 in the first six months of 2018 to 1,435 this year resulting in
victims being cheated out of $1.2 million on total.

Scams and Fraud to Be Aware of, from Price-Gouging to Fake Charities. As Hurricane Dorian continues to
bear down upon the Bahamas, U.S. authorities warn about a variety of scams that can arise during natural
disasters. The National Weather Service said today the “devastating” hurricane is expected to remain a
powerful storm over the next couple of days, moving “dangerously close” to Florida’s coast before reaching
near Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina later this week. In the past, such destruction has quickly been
exploited by scammers. Therefore, experts say it is vital to be aware of what to look out for—from price-
gouging to fake charity to robocalls.
