Perspective:
State of the
Marketplace
It seems VPN providers can't catch a break. In the last month or two
there has been numerous reports of exploits being discovered in many
VPN providers infostructures. This week was no different with the NSA
releasing a statement urging people to patch and update after multiple
nation state advanced persistent threat actors have weaponized these
exploits. Thankfully, these exploits were previously discovered, and
most major providers have since patched them, but as with any
vulnerability there is a risk of attackers creating valid accounts that will
allow them to gain access yet again.
The FBI also released statements this week notifying the public of
attackers that are bypassing multifactor authentication. These bypasses
have been in place for some time, and as such the FBI is urging users to
take precautions to ensure they do not fall victim to these attacks.
While these attacks are rare, its good to always be as vigilant as you can
when it comes to passwords and proactive security measures.
Tū Ora Compass Health has experienced a massive data breach resulting
in the medical and personal data of roughly 1 million people being
compromised. The breach was discovered August 5 th after the NGO
notified the Nation Cyber Security Centre as well as other New Zealand
authorities. The data in question reaches back over 17 years and may
have been accessed by the attacker's multiple times before the attack
was discovered. This marks another week of healthcare providers
becoming a topic of discussion around data breaches and security.
