DAY 8
The Middle Years
The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.
—Joseph Campbell
For most of us, by the time we are in our thirties, we are settled into our
adult way of life. A lot has happened between the time we were just start-
ing out at age eighteen or twenty-one. We may have graduated college,
gotten a job, fell in love and got married, and started a family. Maybe
we ended up divorced or we stopped using drugs. We might have had
to overcome substantial obstacles and start all over in a new direction.
In our middle years, we most likely have a better relationship with
ourselves; we are more aware of our identity, and we can look at some
of the fears we have and realize that they were inherited. We are learn-
ing more deeply how fear can be our friend, how it can be used for
good in our lives.

How are your fears different as an adult than the fears you remember
as a child?
