Monumental Theme selection process:
Theme was selected over a series of meetings of the entire Solstice club be- ginning in September 2020. Ideas were brainstormed, then categorized into several groups of potential themes to reduce duplicate/overlapping themes. Idea groups were then evaluated on their ability to represent objective criteria in five areas: universality, multifacetedness, visual & emotional evocativeness, per- sonification, and originality. From this evaluation, five potential final theme ideas were chosen by the whole group, with the final theme determined by the head Literary and Design editors.
Spread Design:
Under the supervision of the Creative Director and Head Designer, design staff create a series of spread idea sketches. From these ideas, 13 spread templates for 26 interchangeable page types were de- veloped in InDesign. Individual spreads in the final magazine were created by
designating artwork/literary for specific template pages roughed in by designers with design staff assistance. Spreads were then finalized/proofed by the Creative Director and Head Designer.
Artwork Selection Process:
Submissions for artwork are open from September through February, and art- work is submitted by students, teachers, and through digital school art shows. Artwork is selected by design staff based upon four criteria: artistic merit, art- work category, editorial flexibility, and publication theme. Special consider- ation is given to Scholastic Art award winning work. Other than minor crop- ping to fit page/bleed, no editing of the art is done.
Literary Selection Process:
Submissions for literary are open from September to February; all literature is student-created and submitted for con- sideration by students. All literary sub- missions sent to Solstice are admitted and judged by the literary staff anonymously, guaranteeing that all writers are given an unbiased chance to be featured for pub- lication. Literary works are selected on a basis of thematic content, writing tech- nique, and originality. All selections are curated to ensure the most varied array of interesting, unique, and conceptually rich pieces. Published pieces are only ed- ited by the literary staff for mechanics.
Distribution Process:
Magazine is distributed digitally to all stu- dents, and distributed physically to those who paid the HCHS Activity Fee in May or purchased the book in early April.
