‘know how’
Amey’s orange gritters and
snow ploughs ‘set to become
a familiar sight’ on the
south-west Scotland network
A fleet of brand new gritters and snowploughs are ready to swing into action
should a cold snap or big freeze hit the south west of Scotland.
Econ has supplied a total of 56 winter maintenance vehicles to contractor Amey, who this April
was awarded £400m contract with Transport Scotland to ensure highways remain open,
whatever the conditions.
The vehicles are all 32 tonnes – the heaviest vehicles permitted on UK roads – when fully loaded

can carry 10m of rock salt.
Nicholas Russell, Winter Service Duty Officer, for Amey’s Scottish Network
Management Contract (South West), said: “Amey’s winter service vehicles, with
their distinctive orange livery, are set to become a familiar sight on the south-west
Scotland network, this winter.
“These 56 Econ gritters and snowploughs will form the backbone of our winter
service; with all of our patrol vehicles fitted with the latest Mobile Condition
Monitoring Equipment and Dash Cams.
“These vehicles will be ready to tackle severe weather conditions until the end
of the winter period in May 2021; covering 27 frontline and 15 patrol routes
covering almost 400 miles of roads and 1,600 structures, stretching from Glasgow
to Dumfries and through to Ayr and Stranraer.”
