Introduction
This self-study workbook is designed for guiding Master’s students in education and first-
year PhD students in the beginning of their project. Teachers and instructors can use this
workbook to guide students' independent work at home. This book contains self-check
exercises and individual writing activities adapted from a book 100 Activities for
Teaching Research Methods by Catherine Dawson (published by Sage in 2016). The
purpose of the exercises is to help you check your knowledge of basic steps in writing
about your research project, from defining aims and objectives of your study to evaluating
your research. The workbook can be useful in preparing a PhD research proposal, an
outline or a first draft of Master's thesis. In addition, the workbook contains useful phrases
from PhraseBook for Writing Papers and Research in English by Howe and Henriksson
(2007). This book is not for commercial use, sales and distribution. All the materials and
sources are adapted properly and recognized with citations. The workbook also provides
recommendations for reading for interested students.
