The Eulogy of Professor Luke S Arunachallam
Professor Luke S Arunachallam was born on the 28th of February 1959 to his parents Mr and Mrs A
Govender in Burlington, Durban.
He was the third child born to a family of five children.
He attended Malvern Primary School and thereafter Shallcross High School where he completed his
matric.
He became a born-again Christian after receiving the word of God from his friend Raymond’s father
the late Pastor Morgan Moonean.
Following the completion of his matric, Luke enrolled to study as a male nurse and had relocated to
Johannesburg to complete his studies at Coronation Hospital.
Once qualified as a male nurse, he then moved back to Durban to begin his career in the field of

Luke’s love, dedication and generosity for others is what led him to specialise in Psychiatry
Nursing.
While working in Durban, Luke met the love of his life, Joyce, and thereafter married in 1987.
In 1991, they had a beautiful daughter, Mary Ann.
Between 1986 and 2002, Luke worked at the Sparksport Pharmacy in Overport and also assisted at
the UKZN Nursing Faculty and RK Khan Hospital.
Luke moved with his family to Cape Town in 2002.
He began working at the University of the Western Cape in 2004, where he became an Associate
Professor in the School of Nursing and served his final position as Division Head of Student
Administration.
He will be sorely missed by his wife Joyce, his daughter Mary Ann, his three remaining siblings, his
colleagues, students, family and friends.
