When a verb ends in an unvoiced sound then - like - liked
ed is pronounced as /t/ + no extra syllable
When a verb ends in a voiced sound then -ed is stay - stayed
pronounced as /d/ + no extra syllable
When a verb ends in a /t/ or /d/ sounds = add want - wanted
an extra syllable with /ɪd/.
