Readers may remember from previous editions of Connect that the Trust has a vision to build two state- of-the-art hospitals buildings on the LGI site. The first will offer health services for adults, with new theatres for day case procedures and added critical care facilities. The second will be an amazing, new home for Leeds Children’s Hospital, designed around the needs of children and young people.
Both hospitals will support flexible, personalised care based on the latest treatments, technologies and innovation. They will also enable the Trust to expand its specialist services, benefitting patients not only from Leeds, but also West Yorkshire and the wider region.
Last Autumn, as part of the process for submitting the OPA, the Trust held an eight-week engagement period with key stakeholders and members of the public, inviting them to comment on the early plans. You may have seen the proposals on our dedicated website, www.futurehospitalsleeds.co.uk, or visited one of our drop-in sessions.
We would like to thank everyone who provided feedback. It’s been really useful and has already made an impact on the
design proposals. Perhaps unsurprisingly, parking at the LGI was an issue for many people, so in response to these concerns we have increased the number of parking spaces proposed in the OPA.
The LGI development is part of a long-term programme to transform healthcare for patients called Hospitals of the Future. The Trust plans to make the best use of the LGI site not only to offer patients the most efficient, modern health facilities and services but also as part of a wider ambition to create an Innovation District for Leeds. This is an area that would become a hub for health research, innovation and technology.
Leeds City Council’s Planning department is now considering the OPA and the Trust has submitted an Outline Business Case for the new hospitals, which will be subject to an NHS review and approvals process. Although there is still some way to go to secure approvals and funding, we will continue to develop the new hospitals’ design proposals, considering the outcome of various engagements to help inform the planning and design briefs and technical specifications.
