Praise for Maternity Care at Leeds Teaching Hospitals
Women giving birth in Leeds are having a significantly better patient experience according to the Maternity Survey 2018.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals delivers over 10,000 babies every year at St James’s Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary and in people’s homes when they choose a home birth. The service is one of the largest in the country and provides regional specialist services to ensure that even the most complex of deliveries and births can take place.
The maternity service is closely linked to Leeds Children’s Hospital’s award-winning regional
neonatal service which cares for premature and newborn babies with complex health
needs. Together the teams have developed and implemented high profile projects including Family Integrated Care and Kangaroo Care which encourages more parental and family interaction
with neonatal babies from the moment of birth to their discharge from hospital.
The Trust’s survey results were significantly better in eight areas than in the previous survey year (2017) with the main improvements including better communication with patients, more involvement in
decisions about their care, and the responsiveness of staff to provide advice and support pre- and
post-birth.
