Shaul Tchernichovsky
Shaul Tchernichovsky was born in Russia in 1875. He was one of
the most important and beloved Hebrew poets.
After graduating from school, he decided that he wants to be a
doctor and went to study in Switzerland.
But Tchernichovsky had another side to his personality, a side of
muse, (artistic) creation and poetry.
Over the course of his studies he began writing poems. And so,
he had worked as a doctor throughout his whole life but had also
written poems and translated many plays from different
languages into Hebrew.
Tchernichovsky loved Israel’s culture and Judaism dearly, but
also loved Greece’s culture, and so moved to [live in] Jerusalem
at the Greek Patriarch’s house next to the San Simon monastery.
He passed away in 1943 and was buried in Tel Aviv. He left
behind many well-known and beloved poems, sonatas and plays.
