The Vote at the UN
The vote at the UN was on November 29th 1947, in New
York. Not many people know that the vote was supposed
to be before November 29th, but the manager of the
meeting, the Brazilian Osvaldo Aranha, postponed it
several times until he knew there would be enough
countries who would vote in favor of a Jewish state.
When Osvaldo knew there was a majority he gathered a
meeting which held the vote. Radio stations from all over
the world broadcasted the vote. Like an important soccer
game, people stood by the radio and listened together to
what was happening. At the end of the vote when they
declared the results, the Jews all over the world and
especially in Israel began to cheer and dance. Despite the
great joy, David Ben Gurion did not dance. He said they
need to get ready for a big war that could begin any
moment, and that’s what happened. A day after the vote,
the War of Independence began, a war in which about
3,600 soldiers were killed, some of which were new
immigrants who made Aliyah a few days before the war
broke out.
