The Winter Olympics
A spectacular show that included dozens of dancers and the use of
spectacular special effects opened the Beijing Winter Olympics at noon.
Two thousand eight hundred and seventy-seven athletes from ninety-one
countries will participate in the next two weeks in one hundred and nine
competitions in seven sports. Israel also sent a delegation of six athletes,
who will compete in figure skating and the alpine skiing competition,
among other things. In the past week, dozens of people with (lit. verified
to) Corona have been found (lit. located) in the Olympic Village, despite
attempts to turn it into a disconnected bubble. And it is impossible not to
discuss (lit. without) politics - in recent weeks the United States has led a
boycott of the event and announced that it will not send a diplomatic
delegation to Beijing due to reports of Chinese authorities abusing
members of the Uighur minority in the country. Tensions on the Ukrainian
border are also overshadowing the festivities. Today, the leaders of China
and Russia took advantage of the opening of competitions to demonstrate
a united front against the West. In the next two weeks the Chinese will try
to draw global attention away from the plague and the drums of war
towards the performance of the athletes on the snowy slopes. And perhaps
on days like this it is actually a blessed respite.
